RevOps vs GTM Engineer vs Analytics Engineer: Three Roles, One Revenue Team (2026)

RevOps vs GTM Engineer vs Analytics Engineer on 155 US job postings, read in full: employers separate them as align / build / partner. Demand, pay, gates.

REVOPS · ALIGN ANALYTICS · PARTNER GTM ENG · BUILD

Updated 20 August 2026: this post was rebuilt on primary data — 155 US postings collected and read in full by RevGuild — replacing the third-party synthesis it launched with. The methodology section records exactly what changed.

The cleanest description of what separates RevOps, a GTM Engineer and an Analytics Engineer, GTM was not written by an analyst. Employers write it themselves, in the first line of their own job ads: every RevOps Manager posting we read leads with cross-functional alignment, every GTM Engineer posting with building workflows and automations, and 97% of Analytics Engineer postings with partnering on trusted data. Align, build, partner — the separation is the market’s own, and it survives every table below.

This post used to be a synthesis of fifteen third-party datasets. It is now built on primary data: 155 unique US postings — 35 RevOps Manager, 42 GTM Engineer, 78 Analytics Engineer, GTM — collected from LinkedIn in one week of August 2026 and read in full, not queried by title. Two framing facts govern everything below: RevOps is counted on the Manager band only, so its numbers are a floor for the family; and all 155 postings are full-time, so the agency and fractional layer of this market is invisible here — job boards show the employed core. Read every figure against both.

Analytics Engineer, GTMPartner on trusted data — 97%SQL 91% · warehouse 72%the data org — VP Data & Analytics (10 of 78)

Three columns, three coherent identities: RevOps aligns the revenue org around one process, GTM Engineering builds the machinery that runs it, Analytics Engineering partners with both on data the board can trust. And the reporting column already carries the naming lesson: the market posts “Analytics Engineer, GTM”, not “GTM Analytics Engineer” — an established data discipline scoped to a domain, which is why the role answers to a VP Data & Analytics rather than to anyone in revenue.

What a title search actually returns

Before counting anything by title, we checked what title queries return — because most published counts in this category are title queries.

QueryReturnsThe catch
”analytics engineer”68% analytics engineers · 21% data engineers · 5% BI · 4% softwareBig tech titles the same work differently — Amazon posts it as “BIE” or “Data Engineer”, Meta as “Data Engineer, Product Analytics"
"Revenue Operations Manager”87% GTM RevOps · 13% hospital billing”Revenue operations” is also a healthcare term — revenue-cycle management at DaVita and hospital systems
”GTM engineer”100% go-to-market rolesUnambiguous — in title-matched search

The job market has no naming authority: identical work carries different titles across employers, and identical titles carry different work across industries. Any title-based count inherits both errors — which is why every posting behind this post was read in full and classified by its content, not by its query.

Demand: one week of the market

Postings in one collection week

US · same board, same method — the three bars are directly comparable

LinkedIn US, one week of Aug 2026, n=155. RevOps = Manager band only — a floor for the family, not its size.

Two readings. First, the analytics market is roughly the GTM-engineering market — the most defined discipline of the three is also the biggest. Second, RevOps Manager alone — one band of a multi-band family — nearly matches GTM Engineer’s entire weekly volume. For a role regularly declared dead, that is a strong pulse.

The GTM Engineer bar hides a search problem of its own:

One GTM Engineer opening in six is findable by its title

128 openings under the exact title vs 853 across seven title variants — the gold figure is the opening a title search finds. Cargo live board, snapshot 6 Aug 2026 (context figure).

Most GTM Engineering jobs cannot be found by searching the obvious title — five of every six openings sit under a variant. If you are hunting this role, your alert list needs the whole title family, not the flagship name.

And one absence that is itself a finding: not one of 155 postings is contract or fractional. The sizeable agency and consulting layer of this market hires through networks and marketplaces, not job ads — so every number in this post describes the employed core, and only the employed core.

The week, in employers’ words

Top responsibilities per role, as a share of postings with a responsibilities section:

5CRM/stack administration — 76%Cross-functional partnering — 64%Forecasting & pipeline — 74%

The outbound myth, doubled. Outbound campaigns — the work the GTM Engineer title is publicly famous for — appear in only 36% of GTM Engineer ads, and in 48% of RevOps Manager ads. The role’s public image covers a third of its actual work, and even that third is owned more by RevOps. What GTM Engineers are actually hired for, per their own ads, is workflows in 100% of postings and AI agents in 86% — the highest AI density of the three roles.

The overlap is in the table too, and it does not undo the frame. RevOps builds — workflows sit in 76% of its ads — and GTM Engineers partner, in 64%. But for RevOps building is the fourth line and for GTM Engineering it is the first, in every ad; the separation is in what each role leads with, not in what it touches. Four responsibilities are carried by all three seats at scale (55% or more each): partnering, data quality, data models and forecasting. The three roles genuinely share a room — they just face different walls.

Skills: three territories and one border tool

Same sample, same week: n=42 GTM Engineer, n=35 RevOps Manager, n=78 Analytics Engineer. LinkedIn US, Aug 2026.

One tool separates two neighbouring roles by ~11×. Whatever the overlap in stated responsibilities — and it is real — the tooling expectation is not the same job. The full census confirms each role owns a coherent territory, not a scattering of tools.

Only one skill crosses all three territories: AI / LLM / agents, at 77 / 90 / 62% of descriptions — a family-wide requirement rather than anyone’s specialisation. The border skills are Python (Analytics territory, but a strong 43% presence in GTM Engineering) and Excel (RevOps territory, with a meaningful 40% in analytics seats). The consequence for anyone writing a req: a posting that mixes stacks is recruiting from two labor pools at once — price it as two roles or expect the overlap to be nearly empty.

The gates: what must-have sections say

Each role’s gate is different. RevOps gates on experience plus analytics (100% and 96%) — not on code. GTM Engineering gates on domain sense above every tool: 92% ask for sales/GTM judgement against 44% for Clay — and its nice-to-have sections mirror its requirements almost exactly (Clay 44%/44%, AI 69%/68%), which says employers themselves are split on whether the stack gates the role or is trainable on the job. Analytics Engineering gates on SQL plus modeling discipline (88% and 78%).

Two more lines worth reading twice. Degrees are dying fastest where the role is newest — 12% for GTM Engineer against 26% for RevOps and 41% for analytics. And RevOps Manager owns no technical nice-to-have theme at all: nothing technical makes a RevOps candidate “nicer to have” — its differentiation is organisational, not technical. None of the three is an entry-level door: experience medians are 5, 4 and 5 years.

Pay: within $15K, until you look at the ladder

Pay by role — median and p25–p75 band

USD · US · medians of disclosed band midpoints

$115k $182.5k
Disclosed ranges only: 27 of 42 GTM Engineer, 22 of 35 RevOps Manager, 47 of 78 Analytics Engineer postings. One sample, one week, LinkedIn US, Aug 2026.

At matched nominal seniority the three seats price within ~$15K of each other: $160,000 / $145,450 / $145,000. That compression is itself the finding — the first version of this post, built on third-party samples that each measured a different population, showed a $38K spread that one matched sample makes disappear. The large money differences live between levels and job profiles, not between the titles. The analytics ladder shows it cleanly: senior postings median $180,000 (n=17) and Staff $216,750 (n=4) — a $71K climb inside one title, against a $15K spread across three.

Two basis caveats before you quote any of this. Posting medians run ~11–15% above self-reported salaries (Clientell, Salary.com, Glassdoor) — a posted band midpoint is not what the median holder of the seat earns. And samples move medians: our July GTM Engineer report measured $150,000 over 71 disclosed postings on a different board mix, and the RevOps salary report works from self-reported and posted data both. The samples are not wrong; they answer differently phrased questions. State the basis when you quote a number.

The AI paradox

Across the whole revenue-operations family, AI and automation skills carry a +47.3% premium — the largest measured (Glozo, 2,211 postings, context figure). Inside any single title, the AI premium is unpriceable — there is no variance left to price, because at 62–90% of descriptions, everyone asks. The within-title premiums that do exist: Python at +21% for GTM Engineers and +19% for Analytics Engineers; SQL at approximately zero.

The reconciliation is the part you can act on: big premiums live between seats, small ones inside them. AI skills move you into a better-paid role; they barely move the band within one. The one within-title skill that consistently pays is Python.

Posting language alone reveals which role is a settled profession and which is still negotiating its own name. “Senior GTM Engineer” is a hiring label, not a career stage: the title is roughly two years old, nobody has been promoted into its senior band, and the market posts it unleveled, under 21 different names, with almost no juniors below and no rungs above. The two roles with real ladders label a third-plus of their postings senior and show the rungs — RevOps upward into director seats, analytics from Junior through Staff.

The hiring edge is already moving before the titles settle. Equinix posts three specialised GTM-engineering flavours simultaneously — Pipeline & Revenue, Revenue Acceleration, CX & Lifecycle — while the installed base still runs one engineer per company at 91% of employers (Extruct, ~1,200 profiles, context figure). The same week produced two hybrid “RevOps Manager / GTM Engineer” seats. Convergence at the edges, not replacement.

Want AI-heavy work todayGTM EngineerAI agents in 86% of responsibility sections — the highest AI density of the three
Want the most defined, largest marketAnalytics Engineer, GTM~2× the GTM Engineer volume, stable title, levelled postings

One caveat spans the whole table: none of the three is a first job. Experience medians are 5, 4 and 5 years — every door here opens from another role.

What the postings cannot show

  • The agency and consulting layer. 155 of 155 postings are full-time; that layer hires through networks and marketplaces, so job ads cannot see it.
  • The RevOps family beyond the Manager band. The sample preselects the Manager band; director, analyst and specialist seats are not counted here.
  • What credentials are worth. Postings mention certifications only in benefits boilerplate.
  • How long the transition takes. Postings record asks, not journeys.

Everything above these four bullets is what employers wrote. These four are the questions the format cannot answer — and we would rather leave them open than estimate them.

What to do with this

If you are hiring:

  • Write the #1 line first: decide whether the seat aligns, builds, or partners on data — the market’s own ads separate cleanly on that line, and it decides the stack, the gate and the reporting line downstream.
  • Don’t mix stacks in one req: Clay separates GTM Engineering from RevOps by ~11× — a posting asking for both is recruiting from two labor pools and will be mispriced for at least one of them.
  • Budget for the ladder, not the title: the three seats price within ~$15K at matched seniority; the real cost difference is whether you are buying into a levelled path (analytics Staff at $216,750) or a one-band role.

If you are choosing between them:

  • RevOps Manager — the gate is experience plus analytics, not code; the ladder is real (34% senior labels, rungs above the Manager band).
  • Analytics Engineer, GTM — the largest and most defined market (~2× GTM Engineering), the clearest ladder, senior band at $180K; the gate is SQL and modeling discipline.
  • GTM Engineer — the highest median this week ($160K) and the highest AI density (86% of responsibility sections), against no visible ladder and a title only one in six openings uses — search the whole title family, not the flagship name.

If you are already in one of them:

  • Python is the one within-title skill that consistently pays — ~+21% for GTM Engineers, +19% for Analytics Engineers; SQL premiums within a title are approximately zero.
  • Premiums live between seats, not inside them (+47.3% across the ops family for AI/automation skills) — moving roles pays more than upskilling in place.
  • Data quality is demanded by all three seats (55 / 75 / 86% of responsibility sections) — it is the connective-tissue skill that travels with you whichever way you move.

Methodology & source

This post is built on primary data we collected. 155 unique US postings — 35 RevOps Manager, 42 GTM Engineer, 78 Analytics Engineer, GTM — LinkedIn US, one collection week in August 2026, full descriptions read and classified by content, collected by Roman Kliukin for RevGuild. Every figure quoted above is transcribed into src/data/research/revops-vs-gtm-engineer-vs-analytics-engineer-2026.json, committed with this post. Percentages are computed over postings carrying the relevant section — an explicit requirements section, a responsibilities section, a disclosed pay band — and denominators are stated where they differ. Pay figures are medians of disclosed band midpoints.

What changed on 20 August 2026. The first version of this post (14 August) synthesised fifteen third-party datasets. This version replaces that synthesis with the primary data above; third-party figures remain only as named context. The load-bearing changes:

Conventions and caveats:

  • US market, one board. LinkedIn US only — employers that hire elsewhere are invisible to this sample.
  • RevOps is the Manager band only. Its counts are a floor for the family, and the zero in its junior-titles cell is a sampling artefact, not a market fact.
  • All 155 postings are full-time. The agency and consulting layer hires through other channels entirely.
  • Title queries collide. “Revenue operations” is also hospital revenue-cycle management; big tech posts analytics engineering under other names. Every posting was read in full and classified by content.
  • Posting medians run ~11–15% above self-reported salaries. When quoting pay from this post, state the basis.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between RevOps and a GTM Engineer?

Read their own ads: every RevOps Manager posting in our sample leads with cross-functional alignment, every GTM Engineer posting with building workflows and automations. The tooling border is Clay — 67% of GTM Engineer postings against 6% of RevOps — and the anchor stacks differ end to end: Salesforce and forecasting on one side, Clay and APIs on the other.

Is 'GTM Analytics Engineer' a real job title?

Not as posted. Employers write "Analytics Engineer, GTM" — an established data discipline scoped to a domain, not a new GTM role. The word order carries the reporting line with it: where the posting states one, this seat answers to the data org (VP Data & Analytics, Director of Analytics Engineering — 10 of 78 postings), not to anyone in revenue. A title search is also unreliable here: "analytics engineer" returns 68% analytics engineers, 21% data engineers, 5% BI and 4% software, because big tech posts the same work as "BIE" or "Data Engineer".

Which of the three pays the most?

On one matched week of disclosed band midpoints, GTM Engineer leads at $160,000, then RevOps Manager at $145,450 and Analytics Engineer, GTM at $145,000 — all within ~$15K of each other. The larger differences live between levels: senior Analytics Engineer postings median $180,000 and Staff $216,750. Posting medians run ~11–15% above self-reported salaries.

Is 'Senior GTM Engineer' a real seniority level?

As posted, it is a hiring label rather than a career stage. Only 5% of GTM Engineer postings carry a senior label, juniors are almost absent, and the title is roughly two years old — nobody has been promoted into its senior band yet. RevOps (34% senior labels) and Analytics Engineering (40%, with Junior and Staff visible) post real ladders.

Which role has the most open jobs?

In one collection week: 78 Analytics Engineer, GTM postings, 42 GTM Engineer, 35 RevOps Manager — with RevOps counted on the Manager band only, so its number is a floor for the family. The analytics market is roughly twice the GTM-engineering market, and only about one in six GTM Engineer openings is findable under the exact title.

Do I need SQL for these roles?

Only one of the three gates on it. SQL appears in 88% of Analytics Engineer requirement sections, 32% of GTM Engineer and 17% of RevOps Manager. RevOps gates on experience plus analytics; GTM Engineering gates on sales domain sense — 92%, higher than any tool it asks for.

Can I get any of these as a contract or fractional role?

Not through job boards. All 155 postings in the sample are full-time — the sizeable agency and consulting layer of this market hires through networks and marketplaces, not job ads.

Is RevOps being replaced by GTM Engineering?

The postings say no. The Manager band alone posts 35 openings a week against 42 GTM Engineer openings spread across 21 title variants, and the same week produced two hybrid "RevOps Manager / GTM Engineer" seats. The two roles own different territories — alignment and process versus integration and activation — and the data shows them converging at the edges, not one absorbing the other.
