In April 2026, US employers posted 244 GTM Engineer roles — more than the previous seven months combined. It looked like a profession waking up overnight, except for one problem: the median person already doing the job had 7.4 years of experience in a title only a couple of years old. Drawing on a single bounded dataset — 190 active US vacancies, 71 with disclosed pay, and 44 profiles of people currently in the role, all from Glozo Talent Intelligence — this report explains how a market can demand a veteran of a job that barely existed, and what that means whether you are hiring one or becoming one.

Demand: the spike and the role with no natives
For nine months, postings held a flat band in the low 20s. Then April 2026 printed 244 — a tenfold jump on a baseline that had never cleared 45. It fell back, but not all the way: the two most recent months (May 81, June 129) run several times the level of the opening months (June 2025 at 14, July at 23). The floor moved up.

Do not take the 244 at face value. One month that large, sitting on a baseline in the 20s, has collection artifact written on it. What survives scrutiny is the floor rising: the end of the window runs structurally higher than the start. The floor is up and holding — this is not a fad to wait out.
Here is the tension that runs through the rest of this report. The market is bidding hard for a worker it has not had time to produce. A title that generated single-digit-to-40 postings a month through late 2025 cannot have grown its own senior workforce. So the demand spike and the 7.4-year median experience can only both be true if GTM Engineers are being converted in from somewhere else.
What GTM Engineers actually earn
The commercial core. Across the 71 disclosed roles (annual base salary, USD):
- Median $150,000, mean $147,504.
- Middle 50% roughly $129,871 to $170,000 (p25 to p75).
- Full band $82,500 to $210,000.
The tight median-mean gap means most roles cluster near the center. The $82.5K floor and $210K ceiling exist, but they are the edges, not the norm.
One structural caveat governs the two cuts below, and it is stated once here: with only 71 salaries, seniority pay and regional pay are independent lookups, not a safe cross-tab. You cannot slice “Senior in New York” and trust it. Read each cut on its own.

New York ($170,000) and California ($165,000) top the table; North Carolina sits at the floor at $115,000 — a $55K spread across states before seniority enters the picture.

This is not an entry-level job: the 7.4-year paradox
Now the resolution. Among the 44 practitioners, the median had 7.4 years of prior experience before taking the title, the mean was 8.9 years, and the range ran from 1.1 to 24 years. The distribution is back-loaded: 38.6% arrived with 9 or more years, another 29.5% with 6 to 9. Only 4.5% came in with under two years.

The title is younger than that experience curve. So those years were logged under other job names — sales, growth, ops, founding. GTM Engineer is a senior destination people convert into, not a first job.
The pay curve agrees. Entry roles carry the lowest median in the dataset at $113,000, well under the $150K overall median. If you are reading “how to become a GTM Engineer” content that pitches a bootcamp-to-title path, the data does not support it. The people holding this title show up with the better part of a decade behind them.
Who actually becomes a GTM Engineer
This is the cut no competitor publishes: not what job posts want, but where the people in the seats came from. Across the 44 profiles:

Education skews the same direction. 50% studied business, management, or economics; 29.5% studied computer science or software engineering. (Fields overlap, so these do not sum to 100.)
The self-reported skill mix confirms the picture. The most common skills practitioners list are Leadership (51.3%) and Sales (48.7%), with Python at just 22.4%. Despite “Engineer” in the name, the typical holder is a commercial operator who learned to build, not a developer who moved into sales.
Day to day, that translates into a specific kind of work: building enrichment and outbound workflows in Clay, wiring and maintaining CRM automation in HubSpot or Salesforce, querying data with SQL, and QA-ing the pipelines that feed the revenue team. It is a build-and-operate role sitting inside the go-to-market motion, not alongside it.
GTM Engineer skills: the skills gap and the Clay paradox
Employers ask hard. Counts run against the raw posting pool, and a single posting can name several tools, so mentions exceed the number of postings (see Methodology for the denominator):

Practitioners report softer. In the profile set, Clay shows up in about 25% (25.8% as a skill, 25.0% in tool stacks) and Python in 22.4%. The cleanest demand-versus-supply gap we can actually compute is Python: demanded in 110 postings, self-reported by just 22.4% of practitioners. (SQL is demanded heavily too, but the profile data carries no SQL field, so no SQL-specific gap can be measured.) Keep the caveat in view — job-post keyword frequency and practitioner self-report are different instruments — but the Python gap is a plausible reason the role is hard to fill and disclosed pay skews high.
Then the market-structure finding, which is the most interesting one in the whole report. HubSpot is the most-demanded tool, but Clay is the entity that occupies every side of this category at once: it is tied for the most-demanded tool (150 mentions, level with Salesforce), the single largest employer of practitioners (14 people versus 2 at the next-biggest), the most common tool in practitioner stacks (about 25%), and a certification provider (Clay certs appear in 2.7% of profiles). Clay’s own “Complete Guide to GTM Engineering” is widely credited with popularizing the term.
That is not a neutral market signal. A meaningful share of the category’s demand, its labor pool, and its credentialing currently route through one company’s product. Read the Clay numbers with that in mind.
What the numbers mean, whether you’re hiring or becoming one
If you’re hiring (founders and revenue leaders):
- This is a speed game. The median role is open 7 days (mean 9.2, n=113). If your process takes three weeks, you are competing for the candidates the fast teams already passed on.
- Roles cluster in software development (43.9%, 133 postings) and internet marketplace platforms (16.5%, 50 postings). If that is your category, you are hiring into a thick market. If it is not, expect thinner supply.
- Full-time dominates at 96.4% (292 of 303 postings). Contract and part-time barely register. This is a headcount decision, not a gig.
- Budget to the level you actually need: about $113K for Entry, $150K for Middle, $188K for Senior. And expect to convert a senior commercial operator, because that is who holds the title.
The sharpest read for a founder: this role is meant to be owned, not rented. A 96%-full-time market is telling you so. That points to three clean calls:
- Hire now if you are in software or marketplaces, the work is core, and you can move inside a week.
- Wait if the mandate is still vague — an underspecified GTM Engineer req becomes a mis-hire fast.
- Stay agency only while the scope is still forming and the need is a genuine one-off build, not a standing function.
If you’re becoming one (operators eyeing the transition):
- Audit yourself against the norm: 7.4 years median prior experience, a feeder background in sales, growth, or ops (not engineering — that is 9.1%), and a Clay-plus-SQL stack against heavy demand.
- The gap between what postings demand (Python in 110) and what practitioners report (Python at 22.4%) is your opening. The bar as advertised is higher than the bar as met.
- Be honest about what the pattern is: it describes who holds the title, not a guaranteed route to getting it.
The forward question is the one worth sitting with. A role that went from 14 monthly postings to a 244-post spike in under a year is moving faster than any profession usually stabilizes. Does GTM Engineer harden into a durable title, or does it dissolve back into RevOps once the tooling hype normalizes? The 7.4-year workforce says there are real people staking careers on it. The next twelve months of postings will say whether the category holds.

Data: Glozo Talent Intelligence, a US job-postings and practitioner-profile dataset covering June 2025 to June 2026. This report is published by RevGuild, analyzing a dataset collected by Glozo Talent Intelligence — publisher and data collector are distinct.
The demand snapshot is 190 active GTM Engineer vacancies; 71 of them disclosed salary, and every pay figure here rests on those 71. All pay is annual base salary in USD as disclosed in job postings — not OTE or total comp.
Structural, posting-level cuts — employment type, industry, and tool/skill frequency — run against a larger raw pool of 303 postings, not the 190 active set. This is why pay transparency reads 23.4% against 303 (about 37% against the 190 active set): same data, two honest denominators. Tool/skill mention counts (HubSpot 166, Clay 150, and so on) are the same kind of raw posting-level cut and should be read against this pool. Industry classification covers about 92% of the 303 pool — roughly 8% of postings carry no industry tag.
Listing-lifespan figures use 113 timed closed listings. The supply-side portrait comes from 44 practitioner profiles; not every profile carried every field, so sub-cuts range slightly by field completeness and should be read as directional.
Two caveats govern every claim: at this sample size, seniority pay and regional pay are independent lookups, not a cross-tab; and job-post keyword frequency versus practitioner self-report are different instruments, so demand-versus-supply skill gaps are directional. The April 2026 posting spike should be read as trend evidence, not a precise count.
